ParentsRoad Safety for Kids
Back to School season exposes your children to an entirely new
set of hazards. As you prepare for your child's new year at school,
educate them about how they can stay safe on road and in the school
bus. Here are some tips that will make it easy for them to stay safe
while heading to school:
Road Safety
Small children below 10 years are not very good at handling road
traffic. This is because their peripheral vision is smaller and they
cannot see vehicles approaching from a distance. Their height also
makes it difficult for them to see the traffic over a long distance.
1. Find safer, low traffic routes to school. Look for routes that
have more crosswalks and wider sidewalks. Teach them to always use
sidewalks when available. 2. Dress your kids in bright colored
clothes so they are easy to spot from a distance by drivers who
drive in speed. 3. If walking after dark, provide kids with
flashlights or reflective wear on their clothes or backpack so that
drivers can easily see them. Same for winter months when daylight is
less. 4. Advice your kids not just to stop and look before
crossing roads, but also to hear for vehicles that may be
approaching from a turn and are not in view immediately. 5. Make
sure you know all the routes that your kids are bound to take when
traveling to and from school. 6. If older children have to study
late at night, try and make it possible that someone escorts them
back home. Many campuses offer such walk-safe programmes. 7.
Provide older children with cell phones so that they can get in
touch with you if they fall in trouble. Other simple devices such as
a whistle or a flashlight will also aid in attracting help if they
get stuck in a deserted place.
